Opening Doors for Visually Impaired and Blind Children in Calgary and Southern Alberta

 Programs

Aims and Objectives
Coordinate courses, field trips and other events for "hands-on" experiential learning 
and promoting social skills development. Facilitate regular contact, support and
activities among families and children faced with vision loss.

Braille Challenge
ASVICalgary along with the Vision Centre and Calgary Board of Education will be hosting the fifth annual
Braille Literacy Challenge on Thursday, February 4th, 2010. Please contact your child's vision teacher
for more information.








Teen Council Thank you to all the team members, who positively influenced both local and provincial
educational mandates!

Helen Marshall Award - Nominate a student with vision loss that has shown
leadership qualities in the community. Send an e-mail (
asvicalgary@shaw.ca) 
describing this student's accomplishments and they can be eligible for a $100.00
scholarship and the Helen Marshall Award.
 

Braille Challenge™ is a national program of Braille Institute
of America, Inc. 2010 Regional Sponsors for this program
include:

Freedom Scientific will donate up to 26 copies of their new
FSReader daisy book reading software, to be awarded at
participating regional Braille Challenge™ preliminary events.

* Perkins Products at Perkins School for the Blind, whose mission is to
provide education, products and services that build
productive, meaningful lives for children and adults around
the world who are blind, deafblind or visually impaired with

Perkins Products is donating gift certificates for
each regional Braille Challenge™ preliminary event, plus the
opportunity for one contestant to win one a Perkins brailler.
 
          
*Seedlings Braille Books for Children is
dedicated to
increasing the opportunity for literacy by providing high
quality, low cost braille books for children, and last year
produced nearly 22,000 braille books for children in all 50
states and 54 foreign countries around the world.

All the programs listed here take place in Calgary. However any child with vision
loss and their families throughout Alberta are welcome to attend. As well, ASVI
is interested in hearing from you if you are interested in having events take place
in your area. ASVI is interested in serving the needs of all families.
